The Lost Towers / 《無用の彫刻》
『アーティストの最新作展(長岡造形大学、2023年)』で発表された本作は、Bernd & Hilla Becher ( 以下、ベッヒャー夫妻) の名作『Water Towers』を参照し、感染症対策用のアルコールディスペンサーを撮影した写真・彫刻作品である。
ある日『Water Towers』中に登場する給水塔と感染症対策用のアルコールディスペンサーの造形が類似していることを発見した坂井は、パンデミックの収束によりフリマサイトやネットオークションの底値で取引されるようになったアルコールディスペンサーの蒐集を開始した。坂井はそれらをベッヒャー夫妻さながらにアナログの大型カメラで撮影し「無用の彫刻」として捉え直すことで、私たちの生きた劇的な時代を語ることを試みる。『アーティストの最新作展』における坂井のねらいは、現代的なモチーフの転用による焼き増しや形式的なタイポロジーの模倣に留まらない。現代までのあまたの文脈を編み込みながらも、ベッヒャー夫妻の一連のシリーズで一貫されていた、象徴的な遺物を彫刻と名付け再解釈を行うことで対象を通して時代を俯瞰するようなまなざしを重ね合わせている。

One day I discovered the similarity between the shape of water towers and alcohol dispensers used to control infectious diseases, and began collecting alcohol dispensers that had been sold at rock-bottom prices on flea markets and online auctions as the pandemic subsided. By photographing them with a large analog camera and interpreting them as "useless sculptures," I try to tell the story of a shocking time we lived through. The true aim of this work is not merely to imitate formal typology by appropriating contemporary motifs. While weaving in a variety of contexts up to the present day, the artist also reinterprets symbolic relics by renaming them sculptures, as was consistently done in the series by Bernd & Hilla Becher, in order to superimpose a bird's-eye view of the times through the objects themselves."
